Design Guidelines for 5-Axis CNC Machined Parts

Good 5-axis machining starts before programming. These design rules help reduce machining time, avoid tolerance disputes, and improve part consistency.

Internal Radii

Avoid sharp internal corners. CNC milling tools are round, so internal corners require a radius. Larger internal radii allow stronger tools, shorter machining time, and lower cost. If a mating part needs a sharp inside corner, consider a dog-bone relief or discuss the assembly requirement during DFM review.

Thin Walls

Thin walls may deflect during machining, especially in aluminum and plastics. Wall thickness should be reviewed based on material, wall height, tool access, and tolerance requirements. If thin walls are unavoidable, Richconn may recommend fixture support, revised toolpath strategy, or tolerance adjustment for non-critical areas.

Deep Cavities

Deep cavities require longer tools, which can increase vibration and reduce accuracy. 5-axis machining can improve tool access by tilting the tool or workpiece, but cavity depth, corner radius, and tool reach still need DFM review before quoting.

Tight Tolerances

Apply tight tolerances only to functional features such as bearing seats, sealing surfaces, mating faces, datum holes, and alignment features. Over-tolerancing non-critical surfaces increases machining time, inspection cost, and scrap risk without improving function.

Datum Strategy

For multi-face parts, define clear datums on the 2D drawing. A practical datum strategy helps maintain positional accuracy across several machined faces and allows CMM inspection to verify the part against the same reference structure used in assembly.

Surface Finish Allowance

Anodizing, plating, polishing, and heat treatment may affect final dimensions. Critical features should specify whether dimensions apply before or after surface treatment. This is especially important for holes, bearing seats, sliding surfaces, and threaded features.
